Halle 116 – memorial and learning centre
Exhibition in the former subcamp of Dachau concentration camp
The ‘Halle 116’ in Augsburg-Pfersee is a new location for historical and political education: the exhibition commemorates in three halls National Socialism and forced labour in the former subcamp, but also the post-war period with the presence of the US Army. On the way through the exhibition, ‘interventions’ with questions stop visitors and encourage them to reflect, for example, on what scope for action the people of Augsburg had under National Socialism. The texts are presented in German, easy language and English. The exhibition is barrier-free and free of charge. In the last room of the exhibition, visitors and school classes have the opportunity to explore the time of changes and the topic of democracy in a playful way using various hands-on materials.
The design concept leaves the authentic site with all its historical traces untouched, allowing the layers of different time periods to remain visible. Exhibition and information elements keep a respectful distance from the building skin, zoning and rhythmising the areas in light, printed banners hanging from the ceiling. The furniture is based on a modular shelving system that has been flexibly adapted to the different mediation and media formats and still allows for creative freedom within the limited budget.
